Staff Development

Overview:

You will simulate conducting two staff development activities at the building level.  You were provided two video presentations in your lesson during this module in Blackboard.  You will view and subsequently analyze these videos: F.A.T. City (4 videos in length) and Misunderstood Minds.

You will then simulate the organizational skills of conducting staff development activities (using these two presentations) in your building.  A sample memo format is provided at the end of this document

Part 1:

Directions

After watching the video Misunderstood Minds, reflect on one of the children in the video (by name).  You will complete a one(1) to two (2) page analysis by completing the following.

In a one-two page paper answer the following in relation to the video Misunderstood Minds:

  1. What was the school doing correctly or incorrectly in his/her program to meet educational needs?
  2. Put yourself in the place of the parent and discuss how you would feel if this was your child and you had to encounter the day-to-day issues that must be confronted.
  3. As a principal, how would you discuss this child’s needs and your expectations to the teaching staff members who will have him/her in the regular classroom?
  4. Simulate yourself in the principal’s role and prepare a memo for your instructional staff in regard to conducting a professional development activity by showing this video presentation. Prepare a formal memo that identifies you as the building principal and gives the date and time the activity will be conducted.  In the memo, briefly describe the contents of the video and why it is important for their viewing and also, state your expectation (without sounding dictatorial) that all designated staff members will attend the professional activity.

Part 2:

Directions

After watching the 4 part video presentation of FAT City, complete the following activities.

  1. In a paragraph, explain the difference of the concept of “fair v. equal” in the context of teaching.
  2. Summarize the contents of this video in one page or less.
  3. In a paragraph tell why or why not you think this video would be appropriate for all staff members to view.
  4. Simulate yourself in the principal’s role and prepare a memo for your instructional staff in regard to conducting a professional development activity by showing this video presentation. Prepare a formal memo that identifies you as the building principal and gives the date and time the activity will be conducted.  In the memo, briefly describe the contents of the video and why it is important for their viewing.  Also, state your expectation (without sounding dictatorial) that all designated staff members will attend the professional activity.
